Treatment Considerations

Skin Needling contra-indications that indicate the treatment should NOT be performed:

(Please tick where appropriate).

  • Scleroderma, collagen vascular diseases or cardiac abnormalities
  • Active herpes infections
  • Rosacea and blood clotting problems (ie poor wound healing)
  • Active bacterial, viral or fungal infections
  • Taking immunosuppressant medication
  • Emotional instability or mental illness
  • Pregnant or nursing
  • Have had radiation treatment within the last year
  • Have areas of the skin that are numb or lack sensation
  • Scars that are less than six months old
  • Facial surgery in the past 6 months

Skin Needling recommendations that indicate that skin priming and/or treatment needle length should be adjusted accordingly: (Please tick where appropriate)

  • History of keloid or raised scarring
  • History of eczema, psoriasis and other chronic conditions
  • History of diabetes, use of thinning preparations in the past 6 months
  • History of hyper-pigmentation
  • Use of isotretinoin (eg Accutane) in the past 6 months

Notes:

  • Psoriasis and other dermatosis that can be koebnerized, can potentially be triggered by needling even if they have been quiescent for years.
  • Since skin becomes thinner with certain topical ingredients, such as corticosteroids and retinoic acid for example, it is recommended that the physician adjusts the microneedle length to compensate for any change in required penetration.
  • Patients prone to hyperpigmentation are recommended to use Medik8 White Balance ClickTM4 weeks prior to their treatment appointment.
  • Microdermabrasion, laser resurfacing or other facial treatments such as chemical peels, botox, skin fillers, laser skin treatments or plastic surgery should be completely healed.

Skin indications for the treatment: (Needling is suggested for these conditions)

(Please tick where appropriate).

  • To increase firmness and tightness to skin
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • To reduce appearance of scar tissue
  • Diminish appearance of old surgical scars
  • Reduce pigmentation concerns
  • Pre-treatment homecare regime:
  • Improve overall skin quality
  • Reduce pore size
  • To help relax old scars
  • Improve appearance of cellulite
  • To improve appearance of stretch marks

Please confirm that you have been using skincare for two weeks prior to this treatment and list which products you have been using regularly.

Pre-Treatment Advice

  • Waxing
  • Tweezing
  • Electrolysis
  • Laser treatments (any kind)
  • Injections (Collagen & BOTOX)
  • Chemical peels (any kind)
  • Facials
  • Microdermabrasion

NOTE: If you have a history of herpes simplex virus (cold sores or fever blisters), in rare instances a reactivation of this condition could occur after treatment. Please inform your nurse or physician so that an anti-viral medication can be prescribed before the treatment.

Aftercare Advice

  • Experiencing initial dryness, flaking, and a feeling of a mild sunburn is a normal result of the procedure. This is a sign your skin is repairing itself.
  • Cleanse and moisturise your skin twice daily. Use non-active products that help to nurture the skin (PLEASE ASK your therapist for advice). Your skin may benefit from the Medik8 Ultimate Recovery – restorative moisturiser suitable for very dry and compromised skin. Please ask your therapist which mask would be most suitable for your skin type.
  • Avoid touching the area following your treatment with unwashed hands.
  • Do not use any alpha hydroxy acid products (those containing glycolic or lactic acid), salicylic acid products, retinoids (Retin A, Renova, Differin and Tazorac) and other topical acne medications such as benzoyl peroxide for 72 hours after the treatment.
  • Do not directly expose the treated area to the sun for at least 48 hours after the treatment. Use a sunscreen every day that blocks both UVA and UVB rays, preferably one containing zinc or titanium dioxide, which should not irritate the skin.
  • Exercise that causes excessive sweating for 48 hours

The following procedures should not be performed for a minimum of 7 days after skin needling:

  • Waxing
  • Scrubs or exfoliants
  • Electrolysis
  • Tweezing
  • Microdermabrasion
  • Injections (Collagen & BOTOX)
  • Laser treatments (any kind)
  • Facials or masks
  • Chemical peels (any kind)

Treatment Information

Immediately after treatment

  • Immediately after the skin needling procedure, a topical layer of Medik8 serums and creams is applied onto your skin. It is advisable to leave these on overnight to maximise the absorption of the active ingredients.
  • In the morning, cleanse off the topical layer using a mild anti-redness cleanser, such as Red Alert® Cleanse. Pat to dry only.

After the skin has healed

  • Make-up may be used when the skin is completely healed (wait 24 hours post procedure). Using make-up on broken skin poses a certain risk of hyperpigmentation as a result of infiltration of makeup into the open tissue, as well as the risk of potential bacterial infection and inflammation in the treatment area.
  • AHA and BHA’s can be used to soften and superficially resurface the epidermis but only after the skin has totally recovered from the skin needling procedure.
  • A normal skincare regimen can be resumed once the skin has completely healed.

Recommended skincare in between needling sessions

It is highly recommended to use the Personal Medik8 Titanium Dermaroller alongside daily application of topical vitamin C and A serums for the acceleration of regenerative processes and consolidation of procedure results. Follow the directions of your therapist.

Compatible Medik8 products: Personal Medik8 Titanium Dermaroller (0.2mm and 0.3mm); C-Tetra, CE-Tetra, Retinol 3TR, Retinol 40 Boost (premixed with Hydr8 Night), Retinol Eye TR and treatment specific body products.
